The island of Koh Phangan is 744 kms from Bangkok, 1440 kms from Chiang Mai, 100 kms from Suratthani (nearest city on the mainland) and 12 kms from Koh Samui.

Boats and Ferries

The main port in Koh Phangan is Thongsala which is about 20 kms from Thong Nai Pan. There are also boats running from Haad Rin (20 kms from Thong Nai Pan) and Baan Tai (12 kms from Thong Nai Pan). The Thong Nai Pan Express leaves every morning from Thong Nai Pan Noi and stops at a few beaches on the East coast before going to Maenam in Koh Samui. It makes the return trip at 12pm.

From Koh Phangan it is possible to catch a boat to the following destinations: Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Chumphon and Suratthani.

Trains

Trains run over night between Bangkok and Suratthani. They aren't fast but they are cheap and you get a better night's sleep than the bus. Check timetable and prices here.

The nearest airport is on the island of Koh Samui and has regular flights to Bangkok. From Koh Samui it is also possible to catch domestic flights to Phuket, Krabi and Pattaya; and international flights to Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

There are cheaper flights to Bangkok leaving from Nakhon Si Thammarat (Nok Air), Chumphon (Solar Air) and Suratthani (Air Asia).

Air Asia, Nok Air and Solar Air offer convenient and good value fly and ferry services: they fly to a southern airport (Suratthani, Chumporn or Nakhon si Thammarat) and then link up with Lomprayah catamarans to get people from door-to-door in about 7 hours. You can buy combined tickets at Thongsala Pier or online. Read more.

The Road

The road to Thong Nai Pan used to put many people off visiting the area. The road is now entirely concreted. It takes about 30 minutes to drive from the main port town of Thongsala to Thong Nai Pan. A place in a shared taxi taxi costs 300 THB.

The rich will pay over the odds for perceived convenience. Hence the hotels have over-priced speed boat transfers available. Alternatively there are a few speed boat hire operators in Koh Samui you can contact if you want to get straight from Samui to Phangan without waiting for a ferry. Thong Nai Pan bay is sometimes unsuitable for mooring in December, in which case you end up getting dropped off at Ban Tai and having to take the road for the last leg of the journey.

The Thong Nai Pan Express is fairly useless as a means to arrive since you have to be at Maenam at 12pm. There's only 1 boat a day and it doesn't run between September and December. You can't book in advance and the TNP Express doesn't have a web presence.
